GOFO Netherlands advances forest restoration and global climate action

At GOFO Netherlands, environmental responsibility means taking concrete action. Recently, we have supported the planting of 658 trees in the Gelderland landscape and contributed to a major forest restoration project in Chiapas, Mexico. Together, these initiatives restore biodiversity, support local communities, and compensate 350,00 tonnes of CO₂.

Restoring landscapes at home and abroad

As part of our tree-planting commitment, GOFO Netherlands supported the planting of 658 trees and shrubs, split equally between a project in the Netherlands and one abroad.

In the municipality of Heerde, on the flanks of the Veluwe, 329 trees were planted in an area that sits at a natural transition between the sandy soils of the Veluwe and the more fertile lowlands. This landscape has lost much of its historical hedgerows and native vegetation over the decades, and by reintroducing native species, the project rebuilds ecological networks and creates new habitats for local flora and fauna.

The remaining 329 trees were planted through a certified project abroad, extending our contribution to ecosystem restoration beyond the Netherlands.

Supporting forest restoration in Chiapas, Mexico

Through our partnership with Trees for All and Mexican environmental organisation AMBIO, we are contributing to forest restoration in the state of Chiapas, one of Mexico’s most biodiverse regions and one of its most at-risk.

Decades of agricultural expansion and wildfires have stripped the landscape, leaving communities more exposed to drought, soil erosion, and lost livelihoods. The project plants 191,150 indigenous trees to restore endangered hillside forests and provide shade for coffee farms, a vital income source for local farmers.

Our contribution compensates 350,00 tonnes of CO₂ while directly supporting the communities most affected by deforestation.
